Good Morning Keepers of the Faith,
I don’t know about you but it’s been difficult to let it go. No it’s not that you assholes….I’m talking about the election of course. While it’s not my style to get political mind you, but President-Elect ‘Obama’ has been an adjustment for this tired old curmudgeon. While I’d like to think I’m not bigoted and open to such historical metamorphosis but can’t help sense impending doom. I have no proof or particular insight to these things but over the years I’ve learned to pay attention to the quiet voices in my head that warn or sense danger. Whatever you think of the process for electing our presidents, the people have spoken and he’s our guy come January! He is eloquent and well intentioned to be sure, but more importantly he has captured the trust and faith of the majority. My concern is no doubt shared by most McCain voters in regard to his having the metal to keep the numberless Islamic radicals seeking martyrdom at bay?
Madcow made an interesting observation the other day during a committee meeting when he compared Obama to Jimmy Carter. This immediately rang true to me. For those of you without the historical perspective of this period, Carter was elected shortly after Watergate and subsequent resignation of Richard Nixon followed by our ignominious retreat from Vietnam. Nixon’s continual paranoia ultimately caused him to authorize five men to break into the Democratic HQ located in the Watergate Building complex looking for dirt in spite of an overwhelming lead in the polls over George McGovern his political opponent. “Investigations conducted by the FBI, and later by the Senate Watergate Committee, House Judiciary Committee, as well as the press revealed that this burglary was one of many illegal heinous acts authorized and carried out by Nixon’s staff and loyalists. Nixon and his staff conspired to cover up the break-in as early as six days after it occurred. After two years of mounting evidence against the President and his staff, which included former staff members testifying against them in a Senate investigation, it was revealed that Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations. Recordings from these tapes revealed that he had obstructed justice and attempted to cover up the break-in. This recorded conversation later became known as the Smoking Gun. After a series of court battles, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled the President had to hand over the tapes; he ultimately complied. He resigned in August 1974.” For those of us that remember, we were young and outraged by Nixon’s bullshit. I had been drafted for a war that couldn’t be won and was one of many hoping Nixon’s next appointment would be ‘Bubba’s wife’ in prison. The comparison to Bush’s last four years is compelling isn’t it?
Jimmy Carter a peanut farmer from Georgia also came out of nowhere. His timing couldn’t have been better as Republicans were being thrown out with the bathwater tied to Nixon’s corruption. Carter took on the mantle of healing the wounds of America a year removed from the humiliation of Vietnam to unify us and turned his attention inward. He did as promised and cut programs to expand welfare, but did so while ignoring the growing hostility in Iran and other Arab countries. He continued to cut programs he felt unnecessary including a severe slashing of the military budget and even alienated his own party leadership by his extremes. The Iranians overthrew the Shaw in 1979 and held 52 U.S. diplomats hostage for 444 days. Carter was helpless to act. When he attempted a military rescue it failed miserably due to massive equipment failures. The hostages were only released the day Regan took office January 1981 but that’s another story.
Lord knows America has problems right now, but let’s not lose sight of the fact the ‘children of Allah’ want to KILL US and have established a cradle to grave program of indoctrination that has produced an endless supply of suicide bombers, zealots, and wanna-be martyrs plotting daily to rain terror on our way of life. Obama has promised a ‘chicken in every pot’ and I personally believe he’s sincere about healing the divisive wounds that have beset us, but I don’t sense he has the balls to pull the trigger. I fear our enemies will play him like a virtuoso! His ability or inability to keep a realistic view of threats posed by Islamic extremists, Russian resurgence, and China’s wait and see who wins mind set will determine foreign policy for decades to come. What may be his biggest challenge is to maintain our security while keeping our civil liberties intact. Should he fail, it will in my humble opinion have a much bigger price tag than our current bailouts combined. Join me in prayer for our new president, he’s going to need it.
Sorry for the Epistle,
